EsPERANCITA’sMOSTLY TRUE MEMOIR

Esperancita’s Mostly True Memoir is a research-based, fictionalized graphic memoir for middle-grade readers, collaboratively written with my mother and art partner, Leila Gómez Woolley.  The story chronicles Esperancita’s upbringing in and eventual exile from 1940s Colombia, the family's flight to the US as political refugees, and finally, her adjustment to life as a new American. Told in graphic novel format through the eyes of a youth migrant and the lens of childhood imagination, Esperancita’s Mostly True Memoir presents a story filled with humor and tenderness juxtaposed with alienation and loss.
